If you’re an Oakland parent or have any interest in Oakland’s public
education system, then next year’s budget cuts probably have you more
than a little concerned.  Over the next few weeks members of the
Oakland School Board are holding a series of town hall meetings where
you can voice those concerns and help public officials make the best
choices in a difficult situation.

With the Board of Education
back in control of OUSD for the 1st time in 6 years and a new
Superintendent, Tony Smith, at the helm, the district is facing one of
it’s 1st major challenges as they are required to cut almost $30
million from next year’s unrestricted budget-more bad news to add to
the district’s already declining enrollment and revenue.

Smith is faced with the possibility of cutting several programs,
closing some schools or merging others with low enrollment and on Dec.
4 he’ll make recommendations on the cuts. On Dec. 16 he’ll present
his finished
proposal.

The town halls are broken down by district, although open to the
general public, and will continue through January 23.  The dates are
below and more information is on the OUSD website.
