East Oakland’s Youth Uprising recently held an event hosted by radio personality Lady Ray of 106.1 KMEL to teach community youth the ins-and-outs of radio journalism and the art of interviewing. Participants engaged in a round table discussion on topics ranging from interview style to radio internships. Lady Ray brought with her a special guest interviewee: Bay Area rap artist Erk tha Jerk, whose hit song “Right Here” is in heavy rotation on KMEL. With the help of Erk, Lady Ray shared valuable tips on interviewing. One important message was “know your music,” said Lady Ray, when describing the need to be thorough when doing radio. She stressed the importance of a strong work ethic, being prepared, using effective listening, and learning to maintain control of your interview at all times. Participants asked questions about working in radio, the type of schooling that’s necessary, how to find an internship, and specifics about different artists Lady Ray has interviewed for KMEL. To wrap up the event, participants put the skills they learned to work in on-camera one-on-one interviews with Erk tha Jerk. The purpose of the event was to launch a new video program coming soon to Youth Uprising. The goal of the program was to gather youth and have them form a video journalism team that will interview artists on a regular basis. Through the program, they will learn video journalism skills and how to conduct professional interviews. Youth Uprising plans to have guest artists help youth with skill building and perfecting their craft. Once edited, the video interviews will be featured via the internet on http://allhiphop.com, a leading hip-hop website. If anyone is interested in participating in the video program or any other classes visit http://www.yumediaarts.org/ for more information. Youth Uprising is located at 8711 Mac Arthur Blvd. in East Oakland.
