On July 8, 2010, just after 4pm PT, it was announced that a Los Angeles jury found former BART police officer Johannes Mehserle guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the Jan 1, 2009 shooting death of the unarmed 22-year-old Hayward resident Oscar Grant.

City tensions had been high over this controversial case, and many Oaklanders were unsatisfied by this verdict. Large protests brought normal activities in downtown Oakland to a halt. Large numbers of Oakland police moved in, and there was some looting and violence.

Oakland Local staff and contributors, and Bay Citizen contributors, set up headquarters at TechLiminal, a coworking space in downtown Oakland, throughout the afternoon and late into the night to cover this story.
