According to the Oakland Police department, a 21 year old Oakland man responsible for over 30 local robberies at gas stations and convenienec stores is now in custody and has confessed.  On Wednesday, December 1, 2010, at approximately 5:00 AM, the Oakland Police received an emergency phone call reporting a shooting in the 9200 block of Cherry Street.  Officers arrived and met with Walter Sayles who reported to be the victim of a shooting.  No evidence or crime scene could be located.  Sayles was transported to the county hospital for treatment of an unrelated injury.

Sayles requested to speak with investigators about this incident and the reporting officer directed him to the Oakland Police Criminal Investigation Division.  The reporting officer advised investigators that Sayles wanted to give additional information about his shooting incident and, additionally, that Sayles matched the suspect description from a recent armed robbery.

Sayles met with investigators and provided the additional information about the shooting.  After Sayles finished giving the details of his shooting he was questioned about recent robberies.  Sayles confessed to committing over thirty armed robberies at 76 Gas Stations, Quik Stop Markets, and ARCO Stations in East and West Oakland, Hayward, San Leandro and other cities.

The Oakland Police Department is working with neighboring agencies to sort out and identify additional robberies in Bay Area cities in which Sayles may have been involved.  W
