Want to ride with the ladies?
Spanning six major North American cities this year, Clitoral Mass 2013 will kick off Saturday, May 25 in Oakland. The ride will leave from Lake Merritt at 2 p.m. and there will be free bike tune-ups available from Binx Garage and San Francisco Yellow Bike Project beforehand. The route follows north to Berkeley, down through Oakland, ending back at the Lake Merritt bandstand, with a family-friendly after-party featuring women deejays on a bike-powered stage and local vendors, organizations and artists.
The Ovarian Psychos of Los Angeles organized the first Clitoral Mass event last year, with more than 200 women participating in the ride. Inspired by their work, organizers from Red Bike and Green decided to utilize their national network to make this year’s event international. This year, rides will take place in Toronto, Atlanta, New York, Chicago and Los Angeles, but the first ride of 2013 will be in Oakland.
According to the Ovarian Psychos, Clitoral Mass “is for all the womyn (sic) who are tired (pun intended) of the testosterone overload that is the cycling scene!”
Jewels Smith of Red Bike and Green thinks that Oakland is the perfect place to bring the ride. She believes that cycling is a good medium for community building and organizing marginalized communities around physical, spiritual and financial health, all while having fun.
“It’s a bike ride, but more than just cyclists are involved,” Binky Brown of Binx Garage explained.
Because the event is intended to help women feel safe and comfortable on their bikes, CM organizers ask that men leave the cycling to the women – but their help along the way or at the start and end points is welcomed. For folks interested in volunteering, there is a meeting at LOL Maker Space at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 22.
