The YaY! Area always reminds me of an Etch-a-Sketch, every weekend promoters, producers, organizers and community members draw amazing events across the Bay Area landscape and on Monday we shake it up and start all over again.   This weekend promises to be a for the books.  Movies, food, dancing, CD releases, art,  it is a smorgasbord of great things to do.  Pick your faves, grab your friends and leave it all out on the floor!

This week I had the wonderful opportunity to interview Vixen Noir who will be hosting her CD release party this Sunday at El Rio.  She is gonna teach us all how to be a little more dangerous.  Read what this powerhouse vixen has to say about music, inspiration and so much more.

VN_dangerous_new3
Miz Chris [MC]:
  Where are you from?

Vixen Noir [VN]:  I was born in Washington, Georgia, but I grew up in Washington, D.C. Next in line would be San Francisco followed by Australia.

[MC]:  What inspired you to start you musical career?

[VN]:  I have ALWAYS loved and been inspired by music. As a child, there was constantly music playing in our home, in the car. I would sing and dance to records for my family and friends in the livingroom and do little shows in the parking lot of our apartment complex. This passion for music, this deep, deep desire to be a superstar like Grace Jones, Madonna, Beyonce, Lady Gaga has always existed within me. I came to explore it in other ways through dance, musical theatre and performance art. But the desire to be a musical icon got buried by another calling to be a director, producer and teacher for queer women of color empowerment through theatre and dance; life’s challenges and a lack of confidence in my abilities, so much that I didn’t even know it was there anymore. Then during a 3-year creative sabbatical in Australia, I literally heard a voice say to me, “I wanna sing.” And I said, “Okay.” Once I began to explore this calling, I discovered that I had a voice and a gift for songwriting. While in Australia, I began giving more time to my solo works and I became a main character in an underground queer burlesque and performance scene where Sexy was a titillating blend of daring and humor. My creative expression became more uninhibited, more edgy, more audacious. It was in this world that “Vixen Noir” was born. I’m sure my absentee father’s blood running through my veins has something to do with this journey too. Music is his life and he was the bass guitar player for James Brown for 33 years.

[MC]:  What is the history behind your new single “Dangerous”?

[VN]:  Hmmm… My life has been quite a wonderful journey along with bad shit that the Creator and the spirit of my Ancestors have gotten me through. Fucked up relationships that included drugs, violence, drama that damn near killed me; people who tried to destroy my self-esteem and inner-strength, VixenNoir_3-1and of course my own battles with self-defacement. I would say that the last “extremely unhealthy” relationship I had and found the strength to walk away from had a lot to do with the birth of my new single Dangerous. When I got back to the states from Australia and that relationship in 2010, Dangerous came through like magic. The song celebrates my rise above obstacles in my life and the triumph of finally pursuing my childhood dream: to be a SupaStar singer, songwriter, recording artist, ultimately a multi-talented Performance Artiste Extraordinaire. Dangerous is also a warning to others, including myself, to not get in my way. In the lyric, I warn “I am dangerous/I am murderous/I will eat you up/Chew you and spit you out!” if you try to stop me from achieving my dreams.  Another lyric: I will get inside your head and make you lose your mind, refers to how my music will wake you up to the reality that the mind breeds drama, conflict, negativity, self-destruction and you need to ‘lose’ it, not let it control you, in order to live a conscious, fulfilling life.

[MC]:  What are your plans for your EP?

VixenNoir_edit(1)[VN]:  I plan to release my EP which is also currently titled Dangerous in early 2014!The EP will have 6 – 8 songs on it that will specifically depict pivotal moments and experiences of my evolution into a “Dangerous Woman”! To me Dangerous means:

1.    able to kick ass with your fierceness, your presence, your integrity, your power.
2.    able to incite change in people for the better.
3.    able to empower people to be their most powerful selves. To support the completion of my first EP,  I am about to start a 6-month to 1-year residency at the Garage in San Francisco. During the residency, I plan to finish writing songs I’ve already started for the EP, write new songs, continue to work on my voice and develop my sound, and build a show to support and promote the EP that I will tour.
One thing I’ve learned is that this music thing takes money to record, get your music mixed and mastered, distribution and promotion. It’s a trip, so for me, it takes time as I have to do my own fundraising as well.

[MC]: What can folks expect from your CD and music video release party on Sunday?

[VN]:  First of all, folks can expect to have a sexy, fun and inspiring good time! They can expect to be thoroughly entertained by myself and guest artists D. Faust, Dalila Jasmin, Stacy Mack and Kailove. Folks can expect my performance to be edgy, in-your-face, poignant, erotic and full of theatrical panache that is sure to “get inside your head and make you lose your mind!” My girl Miss Gina Gold will be hosting and DJ Trinity will have us on the dance floor feeling sexy and free! I encourage folks to dress it up in their sexiest, most Dangerous outfits and enter our contest to win Vixen Noir Dangerous T-shirts and CDs! To top the evening off, folks in attendance get to see the premiere of the music video for Dangerous on the big screen. I haven’t seen the video yet, but I know it’s gonna be HOT HOT HOT!!!

Q&A with filmmaker Ansar El Muhammad “Zar The Dip”

With opening performance by:
Young Gifted and Black (YGB)

Check out the movie trailers at:
www.FistUp.Tv

Between 2010 and 2012, 4 unarmed black males were killed by police in San Joaquin county in Northern California, within this same time period several unarmed black males were also killed by police in the Northern california cities of Oakland and San Francisco. The Crimes of Police Documentary hinges on these cases and paints a vivid picture of the reality of Police brutality in America. This Documentary is presented from the view of the victims and their families. The film delves deep into these cases while looking at police brutality and corruption from a historical standpoint . The film contains interviews with family members of victims as well as graphic images of some of the incidents as they happened and were being video recorded. The film also consists of interviews with Attorney Adante Pointer From The Law Offices Of John Burris, who handles many of these cases, and also an interview with former Black Panther Party Chairperson Elaine Brown. By the end of this film one is left to wonder how after all of these fatalities of unarmed men, only one officer in California history has been charged with murder for killing an unarmed suspect in the line of duty.

MARCH AGAINST MONSANTO
SAN ANTONIO PARK
Foothill at 18th Avenue, Oakland
11 a.m.

On May 25, activists around the world will unite to March Against Monsanto.

Why do we march?

Research studies have shown that Monsanto’s genetically-modified foods can lead to serious health conditions such as the development of cancer tumors, infertility and birth defects.
In the United States, the FDA, the agency tasked with ensuring food safety for the population, is steered by ex-Monsanto executives, and we feel that’s a questionable conflict of interests and explains the lack of government-led research on the long-term effects of GM products.  Recently, the U.S. Congress and president collectively passed the nicknamed “Monsanto Protection Act” that, among other things, bans courts from halting the sale of Monsanto’s genetically-modified seeds.  For too long, Monsanto has been the benefactor of corporate subsidies and political favoritism. Organic and small farmers suffer losses while Monsanto continues to forge its monopoly over the world’s food supply, including exclusive patenting rights over seeds and genetic makeup.  Monsanto’s GM seeds are harmful to the environment; for example, scientists have indicated they have contributed to Colony Collapse Disorder among the world’s bee population.

What are solutions we advocate?

  • Voting with your dollar by buying organic and boycotting Monsanto-owned companies that use GMOs in their products.
  • Labeling of GMOs so that consumers can make those informed decisions easier.
  • Repealing relevant provisions of the US’s “Monsanto Protection Act.”
  • Calling for further scientific research on the health effects of GMOs.
  • Holding Monsanto executives and Monsanto-supporting politicians accountable through direct communication, grassroots journalism, social media, etc.
  • Continuing to inform the public about Monsanto’s secrets.
  • Taking to the streets to show the world and Monsanto that we won’t take these injustices quietly.

We will not stand for cronyism. We will not stand for poison. That’s why we March Against Monsanto.

“Ill Harmonics”FEATURING DJ/PRODUCER MOONSTARR!thePeople heart Moonstarr. Plain and simple. It’s an honor for us to present him to Oakland. Life is good! See you Saturday.

ON MOONSTARR:
Moonstarr is one busy cat. If he ain’t on the phone holding things down on the business end for Public Transit Recordings, he’s hunkered down behind closed doors over his synths, drum machines, and samplers to bang out mind-melding beats.

Citing musical influences as diverse as Underground Resistance , DJ Premier, Baden Powell, Zakhir Hussein and Sun Ra, Moonstarr’s sound has continuously evolved with releases on such noteworthy labels as Sonar Kollectiv, Guidance, Twisted Funk, Planet E, MPS, Compost, Do Right! Music and his home, Public Transit Recordings. He collaborated on musical projects for indie soul, electronic, and jazz heavyweights such as Jazzanova, Recloose, 4hero, Ennio Morricone, A:XUS, LAL, Ivana Santilli and more. In the process, Moonstarr has gained worldwide acclaim for his music from veteran DJs such as Gilles Peterson, Rainer Truby, Laurent Garnier, Marc Mac, Carl Craig, and DJ Spinna and from various publications like Straight No Chaser, XLR8R, Remix and Exclaim.

Besides running Public Transit Recordings, the label he co-founded with Dialect (Mano Narayanan) in 1998, Moonstarr is busy playing shows and rocking dancefloors from Berlin to Tokyo to Puerto Rico to all points in between. His trademark live performances have graced such distinguished venues as London UK’s legendary CO-OP club night, San Francisco’s BetaLounge, and the eclectic Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, to name but a few.
