As you know this is my FAVORITE time of year!  My sign is Scorpio and this is my season!  While  next week is actual Halloween for the kids, THIS weekend is Halloween for the grown-ups!!!  There is so much spooktacular and diverse trouble to be had that if you put together one costume you can wear to three different parties and the likelihood of the same people seeing you in it is slim.  Now that’s some bargain Halloweening for you!  Have a ghoulish weekend and enjoy my interview with Dulce Garcia from Somos Familia.

Co-Founders of Somos Familia

Co-Founders of Somos Familia

Miz Chris [MC]:  Where are you from?

Dulce Garcia [DG]:  I was born in Mexico City, but raised in East Los Angeles. Moved to San Francisco for graduate school in 2006 and ended up staying after getting heavily involved in the queer community. I now live in Oakland with my fiancé. I am on the board of Somos Familia, specifically helping them with fundraising and community education. I strongly believe in the Mission and Vision of Somos Familia!

[MC]:  What is Somos Familias?

[DG]:  Somos Familia is an all-volunteer organization that supports Latino families with children who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and/or questioning (LGBTQ) and conducts educational workshops, trainings, and events to create and promote family and community acceptance.

[MC]:  How long has the organization been around and who are their primary constituency?Mothers at Pride

[DG]:  Somos Familia was founded by two moms from the East Bay with Latino gay and bisexual sons in 2007 to reach out to other families. With an all-volunteer group of different generations we established our organization mission and vision. Our mission is to create support and acceptance for Latina/o lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and/or questioning youth and their families. We envision a world where youth of all sexual orientations, gender expressions and identities are accepted and celebrated by their families and communities. LGBTQ youth who are rejected by their families have a higher risk of depression, alcohol and drub abuse, and attempted suicide than youth who are accepted or celebrated by their families. Somos Familia brings families together to transform this reality.

[MC]:  Why is Somos Familias having a fundraiser and what will the funds be used for?

[DG]:  Somos Familia is having a fundraiser at El Rio on Thursday, Oct 24th 9pm-2am with drag queen performances in order to expand our services and activities. Funds raised will be used to distribute our educational brochures and video “Tres Gotas de Agua” (Preview)  through workshops and presentations at local schools and organizations. It will also help fund our upcoming volunteer and leadership development training in November, where volunteers will be trained to conduct our workshops/presentations as well as become certified for our Speaker Bureau.

Somos Familia Logo[MC]:  What do you love most about Somos Familias?

[DG]:  As a proud queer latina femme, I know that having my family not only support me, but celebrate my queerness, was essential in my formative years. Somos Familia provides these essential services to the Latino/a community in a way that acknowledges our culture and they do it in Spanish too! Hence making our services and support accessible to parents/families that need it the most. The generous donations from this fundraiser will help Somos Familia support families, educate communities, and develop leaders. It will also lift our spirits and give us strength to continue our work!

Featuring DEBUT collections and designs by thirty new West Coast fashion designers, including Theia Grazi Clothing Co., Rajitha Prakruthi, and Lisa Barghann/Arty Chokers! “RUNWAY MASQUERADE” is Runway Couturier’s ninth production in under two years.

NEVER pay to see a fashion show. We don’t sell tickets. Our invited guests attend free of charge with advance RSVP, and all of our featured designers, contestants, and boutiques show with Runway Couturier at no cost whatsoever! Not only that, we give our designers all the fabric they need to create their designs — also at no cost! How do we do it? That’s our little secret. The next time somebody asks you to buy a ticket to their fashion show, remember this… buying a ticket doesn’t make you a fashionista, and it won’t help the designers’ careers either. RUNWAY Couturier DOES help designers take their first real career steps by removing all financial barriers. Kindly RSVP at www.RunwayCouturier.com. Seating is limited.

Kainbigan
2101 14th Ave, Oakland
11 a.m. – 8 p.m.

50% of all food sales for the entire day will go to support QWOCMAP on Saturday, October 26, 2013

Perhaps you remember Charleen Caabay before she opened the amazing Kainbigan(which means, Let’s Eat, My Friends!)

When she donated delicious veggie pancit and other tasty treats for audience receptions at our Queer Women of Color Film Festival. Or when she dished up yummy adobo at our Closing Night After Party.

Once again, she’s showing how much she cares about QWOCMAP – Queer Women of Color Media Arts Project and Qwocff Sf by donating 50% of all food sales for the entire day to support QWOCMAP.

You can also show how much you care about QWOCMAP while you enjoy the wonderful menu of Filipino Comfort Food at the incomparable Kain’Bigan. We suggest the veggie pancit with a side of garlic shrimp. Oh, and the chicken lumpia. And…

Even when it’s crowded, there is an option for take out.
So bring yourself, your friends, your family. QWOCMAP folks will be there from 12pm to 8pm to greet you!

Its that time of year when we don our masks and party hardy. This ritual has ancient roots that go back at least as far as Ancient Greece where masks were used in ecstatic, wine laden rituals in honor of the god Dionysus. Dionysus was known as the protector of those who do not belong to conventional society. He symbolized chaos, danger, and the unexpected. In his Roman incarnation as Bacchus, this same god was thought of as a liberator whose festivals of wine drinking, music, and dancing, freed his followers from the oppressive restraints of social control.

Halloween in the Bay is as close as modern society gets to Dionysian festivals. Here, the ritual of costuming is not meant to hide one’s identity, but rather to unleash the spontaneous and uninhibited true identity that usually remains hidden beneath the surface. Since ancient times, in cultures the world over, this task of uncovering the true self has been accomplished with the aid of music. Music can be the guiding light, the map to the deep inner regions of the soul.

Like a Dionysian priest, DJ Cali understands the power of music and has dedicated himself to it. Like the man himself, Cali’s sets pierce through idle chatter with clear and truthful expressions from the soul. His knowledge of music is world-class, and the list of gigs he has rocked is illustrious. But more remarkable is his courage in leading crowds to ecstatic musical worlds – maybe even opening doors between this world and the unseen.

That’s why we like to celebrate Halloween with special sets from DJ Cali. Well….that and the fact that he usually rocks a dope costume.

See you Saturday….If you dare…bwahahahah!
