Margaret Mannion started as a volunteer tutor at Berkley Maynard Academy last year and is now a full time site coordinator at Sankofa Academy.  “Working with kids is so much fun, but it’s also rewarding because you’re doing something really good.  Once a child falls behind in reading, it’s very hard to catch up. Our tutors help students catch up to grade level, which can have a huge impact on their educational success, confidence and opportunities. It’s an incredible return for only 45 minutes per week.”

Reading Partners, a nonprofit literacy organization based in Oakland, CA, has just launched their program at Sankofa Academy on 61st Street, and is accepting volunteers for the 2013-2014 school year.

  • No formal teaching experience is required.
  • Commit just one hour a week.
  • Reading Centers are open Monday-Thursday at local schools across the Bay Area.

Reading Partners provides you with:

  • A highly effective, easy-to-follow curriculum.
  • In-person training and on-site support from a full-time staff member.
  • The opportunity to make a difference in the life of a child.

On average, Reading Partners students gain 1.6 months of reading skills for every month in the program.  Currently there are 24 reading centers  serving 1,290 students for the 2013-2014 school year.  They’re always looking for more volunteer tutors so click here for more info and a Reading Partners staff member will contact you to get started! Sessions start December 2nd at Sankofa Academy for the upcoming school year.
