Oakland Local is proud to host the Second Annual Community Voices Awards, which recognizes leading Oaklanders who embody the city’s unique spirit and are dedicated to strengthening its social and economic fabric. The event will take place on December 11, 2013, 6-9 p.m., at Classic Cars West in the Uptown Neighborhood of Oakland.

“The Community Voices winners are game-changers for telling positive stories of Oakland and appreciating the good work going on here,” said Susan Mernit, Oakland Local’s executive director. “Every one of them is out there doing great work that celebrates Oakland, creates jobs, and brings community together. Now we need to get together and celebrate them.”

2013 Community Voices Awards will presented to:

  • Gavin Raders and Haleh Zandi, Co-Executive Directors, Planting Justice, for practicing sustainable agriculture in Oakland while creating training and jobs for re-entry gardeners.
  • Jennifer Palhka, Executive Director, Code for America, for the impact CfA has had on improving civic data and tech community in Oakland and nation-wide.
  •  Konda Mason, CEO, Ashara Ekundayo, Outreach/Marketing, Impact HUB Oakland, for bringing new life to downtown’s core with evening workshops and events
  • Lori Fogarty, Executive Director, Oakland Museum of California, and team for launching “Friday Nights @ OMCA” and making the museum an exciting evening destination for all ages
  • Regina Jackson, Executive Director, East Oakland Youth Development Center, for bringing EOYDC youth to China and broadening their world.
  • Tanya Holland, Executive Chef and Owner, Brown Sugar Kitchen and B-Side BBQ, for being an innovator in the local food scene and a tireless ambassador for Oakland.
  • Christina “Krea” Gomez, Community Action Learning Instructor and Extended Day Program Coordinator at North Oakland Community Charter School, winning Community Voices contributor for the most-read community voices article of the year: “So, um. I just came from ‘Fruitvale,’” about her reactions to watching Fruitvale Station.

The 2012 Community Voices Award winners Effie Tesfahun, Joyce Gordon and Jakada Imani will be on hand to help present the awards to the 2013 awardees.

The Community Voices Awards will be presented at Oakland Local’s annual holiday fundraiser which supports the nonprofit’s community media and news site’s local reporting and coverage. OaklandLocal.com has more than 1.3 million local readers a year at its site, and more than 22,000 social media followers. Money raised this year will be earmarked to support coverage of Oakland education, youth and schools, arts and culture, city hall, and other Oakland city issues.
