On December 21,  The Octopus Literary Salon and the Chabot Space & Science Center are celebrating the Winter Solstice. Organizers promise entertainment, festive food and beverages and watching the sun set on the famous observatory deck. According to organizer Rebecca Grove, highlights for Winter Solstice Salon include:

  • The Octopus Literary Salon will have interactive literary programming to delight and inspire the whole family
  • The Secret Santas singing group performing rock ‘n roll carols. Listen to new interpretations of old favorites; song books and sleigh bells for everyone!
  • Don a lab coat and perform scientific renditions of holiday classics with Science Carol Karaoke
  • Watch original, comedic, mini-plays of ancient Winter Solstices written and directed by Rebecca Grove. We’ll need audience volunteers to join in the fun wearing provided costumes and easy-to-read scripts in a safe, performance space atmosphere
  • A live performance by Oakland’s own all girl surf band, The Hot Toddies!
  • Holiday crafts table so you can make your very own LED lantern, planet ornament, or constellation tube
  • And, check out the live video feed of Solstice sunrise in the ancient burial chamber at Newgrange, County Meath, Ireland.
