Ursula Rucker feat. Wendel Patrick LIVE in Oakland
Special guests: Dahled Jeffries, Aisha Fukushima, Mona Webb, Aima the Dreamer & DJ Cecil!
Leo’s Music Club • 5447 Telegraph • Oakland • 9pm • $15 • 18+

ursula rucker is a Philadelphia born poet, mother, activist and recording artist. She has been performing, recording and releasing works for over 17 years. Ursula has traveled and toured extensively, throughout North America, Europe, Asia, Australia, New Zealand and Africa…sharing her
poetry…her heart and soul. She is dedicated to art as/for social change…and committed to freedom fighting, truth-telling and peace-(and a little trouble 😉 making through her chosen art form. To date, Ursula has released five solo albums (Supa Sista, Silver or Lead, ma’at mama, Ruckus Soundsysdom, SHE SAID)…as well as collaborated on over 50 songs, in a wide array of musical genres, with producers/artists from around the world (such as King Britt, Bahamadia, The Roots, 4 Hero, Jazzanova, Louis Vega, Incognito). Ursula was awarded both the Leeway Foundation’s Art for Change & Transformation Awards. She is the feature of a documentary short called POET. And currently, she has just completed her first book, Drown the Devil…a collaborative project of poems and photos dedicated to New Orleans with Pulitzer prize winning photojournalist, Clarence Williams.

Producer Wendel Patrick has been referred to as “David Foster Wallace reincarnated as a sound engineer” by Urbanite Magazine and as “wildly talented” by the Baltimore Sun. He has been referred to by XLR8R magazine as “a hip-hop producer that could easily make any fan of Squarepusher, Boards of Canada, or Madlib flip out.” The alter-ego of classical and jazz pianist Kevin Gift, Wendel Patrick is rapidly making a name for himself in hip-hop circles as a musical force. Equally at home performing on stage with his band, behind two turntables, beatboxing, improvising, or playing a Mozart Concerto on stage with an orchestra; Wendel Patrick has produced five solo albums on which he played every note of every instrument. Wendel Patrick is a co-founder of The Baltimore Boom Bap Society, an improvised hip-hop collective based in the city from which it takes its name.

Louder Than a Bomb
The New Parkway • 474 14th Street • Oakland • 3pm

*THIS EVENT IS FREE AND SPONSORED BY THE APPRECIATING DIVERSITY FILM SERIES. Let’s pack it in! You KNOW you know someone (if not many people) in this film! Also, YOUNG PEOPLE ARE AMAZING!A Film by Greg Jacobs & Jon Siskel, Louder Than a Bomb chronicles the stereotype-confounding stories of four teams as they prepare for and compete in the 2008 event. By turns hopeful and heartbreaking, the film captures the tempestuous lives of these unforgettable kids, exploring the ways writing shapes their world, and vice versa. This is not “high school poetry” as we often think of it. This is language as a joyful release, irrepressibly talented teenagers obsessed with making words dance. How and why they do it—and the community they create along the way—is the story at the heart of this inspiring film.
