There’s a long tradition of good rap and hip-hop out of Oakland, but it’s not every day that you can experience a full day of great artists, from Oakland, around the Bay, and around the country. Enter Hiero Day, which is celebrating its third annual day of free music this upcoming Labor Day.

The full day of festivities includes nearly 30 acts on three stages at Linden Street Brewery. The event is all ages and includes local food vendors, a special HieroBeer from Linden Street Brewery, and events such as the first ever “Town Cup” Skateboard Contest, a BMX bike demo from rideSFO, Live Art,  Hip-Hop chess,  and a performance by ShowTimeDunk: an acrobatic slam-dunk team out of San Francisco.

The day is organized by Hieroglyphics, a rap and hip-hop collective out of Oakland. The collective own and operate Hiero Imperium Records, and include the Del The Funky Homosapien, Casual, Pep Love, Domino, and the Souls of Mischief. The label was founded in 1997 and the crew has made a name in the underground hip-hop world by releasing numerous projects and working in collaboration with artists such as Jurrasic 5, George Clinton, Xzibit, and Gorillaz.

Hiero Day has been so successful in its three year existence—growing to a crowd of 15,000 people and occupying double the space as it did in 2013—that last year Major Jean Quan officially declared September 3rd “Hiero Day” in Oakland.

Though the event is free, you must grab an Eventbrite ticket to get in and organizers encourage donations so that they can continue to keep the annual event free.

Check out the three songs from Oakland artists sprinkled through this article, all of whom will be performing this year, and then go check out the rest of the superb lineup live on Monday.
