Recently, a short video sponsored by the New York-based anti-harassment group Hollaback! went viral on the web.  It featured a two-minute clip of a woman walking the streets of New York and receiving countless catcalls. The video prompted massive criticism for “over representing men of color” as harassers, but it also stimulated a necessary dialogue on this old-fashioned issue. Street harassment is, once again, a hot topic in the media.

Here, in the Bay Area, this is not a new issue.  Several months ago, journalist Débora Silva interviewed Oakland residents about their perspectives on street harassment. She also put to test controversial  cellphone app – another Hollaback! creation – that aims to curb the problem. Click on the link below to watch the video:
