A crowd of about 1,000 marched through Berkeley and North Oakland on Sunday night in response to the police action during the previous night’s protests. Saturday night, police teargassed and fired rubber bullets into a crowd of mostly students, many who had joined the protest after vandalism ceased. Sunday night’s march was notable for the lack of police presence. Police followed and arrested at least one of the protesters who marched onto the 24 freeway at 51st and Telegraph, but didn’t pursue protesters on surface streets.

Five California Highway Patrol cars and many Berkeley business windows were smashed. Each act of violence spurred the chant “peaceful protest!” and protesters rushing to stop the rioters, causing some fistfights between protesters. As of 2 A.M. Monday morning, a small group of protesters remained at the intersection of Alcatraz and Telegraph, setting small trash fires in the street.
