The Bay Abridged: June 2010 (cover art by Wrenegade)
38thNotes has been a Bay
Area tastemaker since 2008, bringing you the best in local arts and
entertainment. That means that, among other things, we've been
purveyors of great hip-hop coming out of our corner of the world. We
have a lovely global diaspora of Baylien supporters to thank for our
existence, but there is a huge part of the country that isn't checking
for us... like at all. Our editorial team has lived in major cities
like Los Angeles, New York and Chicago, and one thing has become clear,
America doesn't even try to understand Bay Area music.
This of course, isn't a new problem. We have been the most imitated,
swagger-jacked and thankless region in hip-hop for generations. But
rather than sulk about it, we've come to realize in our dealings with
national publications and music journalists that the East Coast and
Midwest don't know who to check for. So while we can hurl mp3s at
nahright and rap radar all day, they will fall on deaf ears without
context. The writing we do in support of each post is meant to help
frame the music we are presenting, and now we are unveiling a new tool
to help achieve this end.
The Bay Abridged is a new monthly mixtape presented by 38thNotes
that will bring you our favorite slaps from each month. Some of the
songs on the tape have been previously posted on the site, others have
not, but either way, each month will bring you am eclectic taste of Bay
Area hip-hop and R&B. We can only hope that the national blogs will
man up and post this, rather than continuing to ignore us and/or rely
on dated hyphy stereotypes.
Take a listen to the dope and diverse offerings we produce monthly.
There are a couple cuts on this June edition that came out last month,
but by and large, this is what June in the Bay sounded like in our neck
of the woods. To those of you unfamiliar with our steez, check us out
with an open mind. Love it or leave it, you will have to respect it. In
a region known for our unique everything and independent core, we
continue to do us, so perhaps it's time you tuned in and took another
listen.
Again, this is not everything that Oakland and it's surrounding
satellites churned out this month, this is just a taste: The Bay
Abridged if you will. Please partake.
