DJ DSharp's Missing Michael Mixtape Cover

DJ DSharp's Missing Michael Mixtape Cover

Over at 38th Notes we do our best to highlight homegrown arts and entertainment. We also try to find a little bit of Oakland and the Bay Area everywhere. A Bay centered Michael Jackson birthday post? Check. Detroit MCs who remake Bay classics? Check. But don't think we've forgotten our mission. Making good on our promise bring you the homegrown (and sometimes transplanted but Towned-out) talent, we have new music, new videos, and a few new faces to share with you this week. Enjoy!

The King of Pop

First off we have DJ D-Sharp's Missing Michael Mixtape full of old classics, blends and mash-ups that illustrate the reach MJ's music had. Sharp spins all over the Bay and also has a respectable career as an emcee, but here he shows off his crate game and musical appreciation as he offers his interpretation of Michael's legacy. Download Here!

We also have a folksy but dope remix of "Beat It" from the West Bay band Pomplamoose. The duo has a large following thanks to their multi-instrumental savvy, signature sound and split screen video songs that highlight their adept musicianship. If you don't know, check them out!

And finally we have a rare video interview that MJ did with Oakland's Soul Beat TV in 1979 as he promoted his Off The Wall album.

New Music

Brothers Amor is a jazz influenced hip-hop duo from So Cal. But for the last few years they've called Oakland home, and they have no plans to leave anytime soon.  During an interview on Streets Is Talking, the group gushed about their love for all things Bay and when you check the music, it's clear that The Town is clearly part of their identity.

While the EP's title may lead you to believe that it's a collection of love songs, Love is Back refers more to the motivation behind the music. They do this for the love of hip-hop. To download the EP click here.

Oakland in Black and White

In "Star" Supreme Sketch rhymes about growing up in The Town and opting out of the much talked about and often glorified "street life." Using B.O.B.'s "Nothing on You," as the soundtrack, he travels through different parts of Oakland giving you a few of the city through his eyes. It's a good juxtaposition to FAB's "F*ck the World." Both are reality, but this leaves me feeling hopeful.

All The Way Live

If you've seen Isis Genisis perform before, chances are you're anticipating the next time you get to witness her take the mic and shut it down. We're talking big vocals, high energy, lots of color, and feathers. While some artists are content with minimal movement and lip syncing, she hits the stage to put on a show. Holding her own next to dope MCs like her best friend Do D.A.T. and standing out even when she sings backup.

This weekend you can catch this super funky Oakland girl on the main stage at Oakland Pride. The event takes place Uptown from 12-6pm and features 60 artists including Yo-Yo and the music legend Chaka Khan. Oh and it's just $5 to get in.
