August’s East Bay Bike Party begins at the Lake Merritt BART station (Ninth and Oak streets) at 8 p.m. this Friday, Aug. 13, and features a “Superheroes” theme. Riders and volunteers will be gathering beginning at 7:30 p.m., in costume and ready to ride.
For those not familiar with East Bay Bike Party - EBBP - the organization describes itself as a "mobile party put together for riders of all ages, experience levels and types, to meet, ride and play together in the streets.”
While August’s party starts out at the usual Bat-time and place, the route will head east and south into new territory and adventures.
With the “Superheroes” theme comes a costume safety caveat or two. Any masks should not limit riders’ vision while protecting their secret identities. Additionally, EBBP and super-suit designer Edna Mode recommend costumes with short or entirely absent capes, which won’t get caught in wheels or brakes or obscure lights. Think more Wonder Woman or Shazam! than Superman, to protect heroes and citizens alike.
Those wishing to get more involved with East Bay Bike Party are encouraged to sign up for their mailing list or email them with questions or to volunteer.
