First Friday comes but once a month, and this month offers up a panoply of art stroll options.

Mama Buzz which is closing soon, is featuring artwork by Shannon Shaw, of local rock’n’roll favorite Shannon and the Clams. Come bid adieu to Mama Buzz, a landmark Oakland art cafes and one of the founding members of Art Murmur, as it goes out in style. Located at the nexus of it all, this will be a swan song you don’t want to miss.

Next, mosey on down to Oakopolis, which is around the corner from Mama Buzz. Oakopolis consistently offers up quality fare, and this month is no different. "Solstice Altar: One with Life" features work by Jeanne Jabfour, Anne Hege, Marcy Voyevod and Joell Jones. The artists tackle the Winter Solstice theme with a focus on spirituality and nature.

You may enjoy "Something You Could Wipe Off, Wash Away, Peel Off on 61st Street." Around Poetics has brought together a group of artists who will be focusing on this central theme. It’s sure to bring some texturally intriguing and ephemeral art to your eyes.

Swarm Gallery in Jack London Square is presenting Mystical Menagerie, with work by Laura Ball and Jillian Ludwig. The artists use animals as an allegory for struggles we all face today, excellently executed whimsically and in a variety of mediums.

After you’re done gallery hopping, if you’ve still got some pep in your step, check out Hottub’s album release at Vitus in Jack London Square. Hottub, a progenitor of the Oakland art scene, always throws a party worth talking about.

So kick off your weekend with the best and brightest of Oakland art and music.
