East Oakland residents were disrupted at lunch time Thursday when a collision between two vehicles resulted in a white truck hanging from telephone guide wires and a stop sign.
At noon, a vehicle moving east on 14th Avenue toward East 20th street collided with a green four-door car and was catapulted to the the north side of the intersection.
Police on the scene said the accident was the result of a high speed chase, though, according to witnesses, the truck driver was driving slowly.
Police say the incident started on International Boulevard where three police cars tried to cut him off. At that point the driver turned onto 14th Avenue. They believe he turned onto 14th in order to reach the freeway for an easier escape.
Thy Sang, who works a night shift, was sleeping in her home on 14th Avenue only a few houses from the scene. She said the sound of the collision brought her out of her slumber.
"I just can't believe he [the driver] got out of the car," she said. "The whole thing gives me goosebumps."
Sang's mother stepped outside of their home soon after the impact and said she saw the white truck's driver running away from the vehicle.
Witnesses say that a passenger in the green car was injured. The driver of the white truck did not appear injured according to witnesses.
Within minutes of the accident, 50 neighbors amassed on the corner as they watched up to 10 police officers, most on motorcycles, hovering around the vehicles.
Seems like if it had jumped over the fence!
