When the Black Panther Party for Self Defense was formed in 1966, theirmission was clear: self sufficiency, an end to police brutality and better access to jobs, healthcare and education for African Americans in urban communities throughout the country.

In the 43 years since, the legend and influence of the party is still felt not just in West Oakland where the party got it's start but in communities around the country. Throughout October the It's About Time Committee, a coalition of former panthers and supporters, has been celebrating the anniversar and highlighting the party's contributions through a series of programs and teach ins.

This weekend's Black Panther Party History Month Celebration offers a chance for those unfamiliar with the party's history to gain a deeper understanding of it's mission, programs and structure and for those who were associated with the party to reminisce and reflect on what's known today as one of the most significant radical cultural organizations in US history.

The event kicks off with a Book Fair and Teach in Friday afternoon. The party was known for it's unapologetic use of art and writing as political propaganda and attendees can purchase and get a first hand look at some of these historic works, many that have long been out of print.

The documentaries in Saturday's film festival offer a deeper look into the party with films focusing on both it's famous and lesser known members including a documentary on Richard Aoki, the Japanese-American founding member and Field Marshall of the Black Panther Party who grew up in West Oakland and passed away in 2009.

There are also satellite exhibits throughout the city including an exhibit at the downtown library focusing on the women of the Black Panther Party and another at the West Oakland library featuring the party's “underground” newspapers from the 1960's and '70's.
