Implemented in 2005, the "Options" process allows families to participate in selecting schools in the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) that they think will best suit their children's needs. The time allowed for selection and registration--otherwise known as Options Period--is almost upon us. Enrollment for the 2010 - 2011 School Year runs from December 7, 2009 to January 15, 2010. Whether students are new to school or just new to the district, it's time for them to find their places in what will be their classrooms.
Many schools are currently holding open houses and tours so that families might familiarize themselves with what those schools have to offer. Schedules of tours and open houses can be found at the OUSD website:
Although the process is slightly different for elementary schools than it is for middle and high schools, the essence is more or less the same. Families research schools they might like their students to attend, and then apply for their top choices. "The Options Process does not guarantee that every family will be accepted into its first-choice school," the OUSD website clarifies. Instead it offers more "access to a range of academic programs," with a view toward serving "the District goals of Achievement, Equity, and Accountability."
A few additional key dates in the process include a help night on December 3 (check the OUSD website for locations), where families can, in person, ask staff any questions about the process. By March 8, families should be notified by mail of their students' school selections. At this time, parents are encouraged to register their children at the selected schools. Appeals may also be submitted until June 30.
