Friday marks the one year anniversary of the death of Oscar Grant and many are taking these next few days to reflect on not just Grant's case, but the situation from which the incident emerged. Although Mehserle is in custody and his trial is scheduled to begin in January, several questions remain.

How do we use the incident as a way to address police brutality and interactions between authorities and communities of color?  What role does personal responsibility play in this case? How can we use what we've learned from Grant's death, heal our collective wounds and move forward?

Some of these issues will be on the table this Friday at Oscar Grant memorials at the Fruitvale BART Station and the Humanist Hall.

At 2pm on Friday at the Fruitvale BART family and friends are gathering to pay tribute to Grant's memory and share stories and successes from the past year.  During the vigil, members of the family will lead prayers along with performances by several area poets and musicians and statements from prominent community leaders including J. Alfred Smith Jr. and District 6 council member Desley Brooks. The vigil will be followed by a 5pm rally and community mobilization at the station.

Following the vigil the Humanist Hall is hosting a memorial from 6-11pm, where Grant's memory will be honored through music, spoken word and video, many done by young people touched by the event.  Featured performers include poet and community activist and Boots Riley from hip hop group The Coup. The event is free but donations will be accepted for Grant's family.
