We’ve long known Oakland and the Bay Area to be a
hotbed of
farming and foodie activity. A number of these local farmers, foodies,
chefs
and food justice activists happen to be amazing women, and some of these
women
are profiled in a new book out by local writer Temra
Costa.
Costa’s book,
Farmer Jane:
Women Changing the Way We Eat,
shines a bright light on the efforts of 30 women active in shaping the
nation’s
food system. This Thursday,
Costa and some of
the Bay Area women profiled in
her book are gathering for a combo restaurant opening, book reading, and
round
table discussion at the new restaurant Revival Bar + Kitchen.
Oakland’s
own
do-it-yourself farmer
Novella
Carpenter, author of her
own
tome on intensive farming in downtown Oakland, is a featured guest,
along
with Willow Rosenthal, who founded
City
Slicker Farms, a nonprofit
that helps West Oakland residents get better food access by planting
backyard
gardens and running urban farms.
