Zakiya Harris, Fresh Fest co-founder, with MC Boots Riley od The Coup
What do you get when you combine sustainability-focused community organizations, talented young entrepreneurs and organizers, and a message that building sustainable community is one way to solve problems in Oakland? The First Fresh Fest in Oakland---an amazing outpouring of support from local musicians including Mistah FAB, Erk Tha Jerk, Do D.A.T., Phife from A Tribe Called Quest, Holly Saucy, Pam the FUNK-stress , O-Zone & J. MIllionaire, Ashel Seasunz Eldridge, GTO and Young Naddaahh--plus London and Aaron Abelman in the audience (along with others I've probably missed.) With Boots Riley as MC, David Roach inspiring the crowd, and Zakiya Harris and Pandora Thomas circulating round the booths-and tons of people enjoying the music, the message and the sun, this was a sweet day.
On a day that turned from cloudy to sunny, more than 200 people came out to celebrate peaceful, green commmunity and social change--and it rocked. For me, the most amazing thing was the chance to meet local musicians (and to hear Mistah FAB tell me he loved Oakland Local, definitely a lifetime high), talk with community members about Oakland Local, and learn about so many of the passionate, talented people here in the Town.
We've got photos galore in the slide show, and some videos as well-so enjoy--and come out next year!
just a couple quick comments:
1) it's Pam the FUNK-stress and Do D.A.T.
2) FF2010 was the first Oakland event, but it's actually the third-annual Eco-friendly, solar-powered concert that the Grind for the Green crew has produced.
3) shout-outs to Keba Konte, Ryan Nicole, Casual from Hiero, Galen and the OGYMAC crew, Debra and Conscious Youth Media, Bay Localize, all the performers who kept it flowin' all day, Phife Diggy for nicing up the park with ATCQ classics, and everyone who came out for a positive, free, hip-hop event.
Peace!
