Even though the environmental movement’s been around for decades, it’s safe to say that Oakland’s community activism and emphasis on green collar jobs, urban farming and organic, healthy foods has established us as a leader in the the nationwide resurgence.
But of course, our green movement ain’t nothing like your momma’s green movement. We’ve flipped eco conscious with new styles and soundtracks and people around the country have noticed, as evidenced by the heavy Oaktown presence on Grist.org’s list of green change makers.
Released earlier today, the “40 People Who Are Redefining Green” shines a spotlight on the new face of green living. Recognizing that the movement has gone beyond the “treehugging hippies” and “posturing politicos”, the list profiles “people who are altering the green landscape.”
6 Oaklanders in all made the list: Ambessa Cantave a hip hop artist and educator with the Alliance for Climate Change, Valerie Casey, founder of the Designers Accord (”The Kyoto Treaty of Design”), Renewable Funding president Cisco Devries, Zakiya Harris, founder and Executive Director of Grind for the Green and Bryant Terry, chef and author of “Grub: Ideas for an Urban Organic Kitchen.”
18 Californians in all made the diverse list ranging from architects to restaurateurs to researchers including Matt Golden, Cameron Sinclair and Kate Stohr from Sausalito, Dorothy Le from Los Angeles, Irma Muñoz from Baldwin Vista, Chandrasekhar "Spike" Narayan from Silicon Valley, Berkeley’s Jack Newman, Steve Price from El Cerrito, Elena Rivellino and Dennis Stein of San Diego, Alan Salzman of Atherton and Selim Sandoval of Ventura.
