Halloween arrives in Oakland with weekend fun for all ages

With the spookiest day of the year only days away, Oakland Local has compiled a list of events for children - young and old - to attend.

And if you’re not sure where to take your family to enjoy the spirit of Halloween, here are some places you might want to check out.

Pumpkin patches and farms are very popular this time of year. Piedmont Avenue Pumpkin Patch, located at 4414 Piedmont Ave. in Oakland, offers pumpkins already gathered from the field everyday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. through the month of October.

Located in the Bayfair Center Mall, 15555 East 14th St. in San Leandro, Pick of the Patch Pumpkins gives children several options of entertainment. Not only does it let you pick your pumpkin, but it also has a gift shop, snacks and a refreshment stand, restrooms, large inflatable slides, obstacle courses and castle or moon bounce houses.

Pick of the Patch Pumpkins is open from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Speer Family Farm is a family owned and operated farm that showcases a wide variety of high quality and locally grown pumpkins, gourds and squash. Located at 5600 Christie Ave. in Emeryville, the farm is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. It has a straw or hay bale maze, a child-sized hay bale maze, wagon rides, restrooms, farm animals, a petting zoo, and a large castle or moon jumpy house.

The Chabot Space & Science Center, located at 10000 Skyline Blvd. in Oakland, will have a Sinister Science Halloween Party and Space Missions on Saturday, Oct. 29. There will be Discovery Lab activities with spooky read-alongs for children and special guest appearances. Kids also can wear costumes, drink spooky punch, enjoy hands-on activities and fly a simulated space flight mission in the Challenger Learning Center.

Activities are free with general admission while the missions require a separate ticket. General admission is $10; $7 for members. Missions are for ages 8 and& up. Children under 16 must be accompanied by a paid adult. Space missions start at 1 and 3 p.m. To register for a seat on a space mission, call (510) 336-7373.

The weekend before Halloween, the Children’s Fairyland - located at 699 Bellevue Ave. in Oakland – will have a Jack O’ Lantern Jamboree. Children can expect two full days of delightful, not frightful, activities. Some of the activities and entertainment include: face painting, arts & craft, balloon twisting, costumed fairytale characters, clowns, magicians, special presentations from the children’s theater program and the storybook puppet theater, two jumpers (one for little kids and one for big kids), unlimited rides, costume parades, goody bags and treat stations, and the spooktacular Old West Junction Ghost Town. Admission to Children’s Fairyland for the Jack O’ Lantern Jamboree is $10 for all ages and $5 for members on both days (Saturday, Oct. 29 and Sunday, Oct. 30). The Fairyland will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., weather permitting.

Another weekend Halloween event for children is The Oakland Zoo’s annual “Boo at the Zoo.” From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. this weekend, kids have the chance to take a tour of the zoo, which is located at 9777 Golf Links Road in Oakland. In addition, they can search for clues in a scavenger hunt, collect a mystery fun goody bag, ride a spooky boo train for free (ages 2-14), be a part of a costume parade at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., and join guinea hogs on their walks at noon and 2 p.m. For more information about the general admission for the two-day (Saturday, Oct. 29 and Sunday, Oct. 30) Boo at the Zoo event, call (510) 632-9525.

If you like Halloween parades, there will be several in the city of Oakland. The Lakeshore Avenue Business Improvement District and the Lakeshore Baptist Church are hosting their annual Halloween Parade and Children’s Harvest Festival on Saturday, Oct. 29, beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Children in costume can march down Lakeshore and Lakepark avenues and stay to trick or treat on the avenues or enjoy festivities until 2 p.m. at the church, which is located at 3534 Lakeshore Ave. For more information, visit the website for The Lakeshore Annual Children’s Halloween Parade & Harvest Festival.

On Sunday, Oct. 30, there will be a Children’s Halloween Parade. The venue of the parade is the Presbyterian Church located at 5951 College Ave. in Oakland. Children can start their trick or treating at approximately 11:45 a.m.  

There will also be a Lions Club Halloween Parade on Halloween day from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at Mountain Village Park in Montclair. This is an annual event for kids and pets and is the perfect opportunity for them to show off their unique costumes. Merchants along Mountain Boulevard, La Salle Avenue and Moraga Avenue will be on hand to give out candy and cheer on the participants in the parade.

Around the same time, the Temescal District will have its sixth annual Temescal Trick or Treat event. Kids and parents of all ages are invited to walk Telegraph Avenue and collect treats from local merchants.
