Brad Pitt enters set of Money Ball on location in Oakland, CA
A few weeks ago, I was an extra in the movie Money Ball - starring Brad Pitt - which was being filmed at the Oakland Coliseum.
There was one long line with thousands of excitedly eager extras that extended throughout the coliseum parking lot. There were seas of green, yellow and white shirts, hats and letterman jackets that read Oakland A’s.There were many young good-looking athletic men in the facility as well.
While waiting to reach the white tent, where you receive your ticket and hand stamp, a crazily excited man yelled “If you don’t have your online conformation, leave now,” while riding on his electric scooter. I recognized his voice as the same man that called me and told me what to expect on the movie set.
I was in shock how many people were dedicated to their roles as extras - painted faces, colored wigs, humongous fan signs and cheery attitudes were everywhere. People believed they were a part of Oakland history.
Once inside the Oakland stadium, my close friend, uncle and I were escorted to the extras seating section. There was a crowd of a few hundred people seated already. The day turned into night, as we were in the stadium seats.
It was exciting to be so close to directors, actors and watched scenes being shot. The excitement became slightly dull once we moved to a new section of the stadium every 30 minutes. Why? The directors were trying to create the illusion that there were 30,000 people in the stadium.
“You all are at a 10. I want you to be at a 6!” yelled one of the directors. He told us to smile, scream, but to be natural. Many people had trouble with being natural because they were so excited to be on film.
The most exciting part came when Pitt walked onto the baseball field. The crowd became loud, ecstatic and many cell phones popped out of purses. I overheard girls saying, “He winked at me!” I was amazed because he was more that 60 feet away from everyone. I couldn’t even tell it was him. But, surely it was. Who else could command all the attention on set for 10 minutes and exit in a black limousine?
Brad Pitt was the star of my first film as an extra. Can you top that ?
