Inaugural Spirit Awards celebrate, honor Bay Area community leaders, individuals

By Debi Mason

In the Spirit -  an Oakland-based organization - will host its first annual awards celebration this Sunday, Oct. 2, honoring leaders and individuals that have influenced and impacted the community through their tireless efforts.

"We are excited about the acknowledgement and support that In the Spirit is receiving for its inaugural awards program,”  In the Spirit co-founder Tally Knott said . “It is our pleasure to recognize individuals who make significant contributions (often quietly) in our community.”

According to Knott, the evening will host an impressive list of dignitaries. The 2011 honorees and invited guests include Oakland Mayor Jean Quan; award-winning entertainers/recording artists Pete Escovedo, Sheila E. & family; Lady Tramaine Hawkins; Bishop J.W. Macklin, Pastor of Glad Tidings Church; Dr. Joseph Marshall, Co-founder/Executive Director, Omega Boys Club/Street Soldiers; Jennifer Peck, Executive Director, Partnership for Children and Youth; and Coach Alonzo Carter.  The Take Wings Foundation -  founded by TV and film actress Terri J. Vaughn - also will be honored.

Uplifting performances by individual Bay Area Gospel artists and choirs will round out the event.
