International Climate Day, Oct 24 : Where are the Oakland and Bay Area events?

350's leading the charge in International Climate Action Day

350's leading the charge in International Climate Action Day

On Oct. 24, tens of thousands of people will be peacefully demonstrating around the world in an International Day of Climate Action, calling for  action to reduce CO2 emissions to 350 parts per million (ppm), the measure of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere that is known to be the mimimum point to safely sustain life on Earth. 350.org, a small (seven staffers) organization based in Berkeley, Calif., started by writer--and now activist--Bill McKibben,  is coordinating the international day of action. There are more than 4000 events registered in 170 countries, with multiple events planned in Oakland and the East Bay.

"As an east bay native working on the 350 campaign from Berkeley, I'm thrilled by the support we've been getting in the Bay. On Saturday the Bay will rep 350 for the world, with the world.," says Matt Fitzgerald,  a community organizer for 350.org who is frantically coordinating both East Bay events and a larger scene.

Among the events Matt--and others--are working on are there:

Film Screening of Garbage Dreams & Dinner, 5 PM

2230 Shattuck Ave.
Berkeley, AL, 94704

Join GAIA and friends for a film screening of Garbage Dreams & no-host dinner.

Garbage Dreams is a powerful documentary that follows three teenage boys into the grassroots recycling trade and growing up in the world's largest garbage village, on the outskirts of Cairo. Far ahead of any modern "Green" initiatives, the 60,000 Zaballeen (Arabic for "garbage people") survive by recycling 80% of the garbage they collect. When their community is suddenly faced with the globalization of its trade, each of the teenage boys is forced to make choices that will impact his future and the survival of his community.

After the film we invite you to join us for a no-host dinner and informal discussion and comments by Neil Tangri, GAIA's Climate Change Campaign Director and Martin Bourque, Executive Director of the Ecology Center. They will speak about how this film relates to the broader concerns of recyclers globally, and to climate action strategies.

When & Where: 5pm Saturday, October 24th at Shattuck Cinemas, no-host dinner to follow at Mel's The Original, which is connected to the theater.

Tickets for the film are $12, please note that it is playing at Shattuck Cinemas as part of the Arab Film Festival, buying tickets prior to the event is advised at www.aff.org.
