Join G.U.R.L.S. Rock Movement: OL's newest media partner

On Saturday, Aug. 28, OL's new media partner - G.U.R.L.S Rock - will host its first G.U.R.L.S. Rock Summit. The event will run from from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Oakland City Hall, 1 Frank Ogawa Plaza.

The program was established by the founder of I C Hope: The Making a New Reality Foundation, Raye Mitchell, who was recently awarded a Jefferson Award by a local news station.

The G.U.R.L.S. Rock stands for growth, unity, respect, leadership and success. The one-day summit will provide experimental learning, training of young community leaders and support to girls of color in Oakland. This program has developed during  a time in which many girls of color face challenges with self-esteem, body image, high rates of child trafficking in Oakland and a tough economy.

I C Hope has a unique vision for young girls of color, coining the term "socialprenuer" - a twist on entrepreneur. According to the organization's website, a socialprenuer is an "individual applying business entrepreneurial skills, experiences and training to combat social problems and challenges limiting their vision and ability to achieve greatness." The G.U.R.L.S. Rock program continues with the vision of teaching and guiding young girls of color to become CEO's and CFO's of their own companies. These young girls are being empowered to break the glass ceiling.

To join the movement of empowering these young residents of the Oakland-Bay Area, register here for the G.U.R.L.S. Rock Summit 2010.
