Following Johannes Mehserle's recent conviction of involuntary manslaughter in the 2009 killing of Oscar Grant, many people in Oakland say the verdict was too lenient.
However, the Grant case seems to be tapping into deep anger and pain in Oakland regarding high rates of unemployment, violence, poor schools and tension between law enforcement and citizens. In particular, these obstacles are challenging the community’s youth who are growing up surrounded by violence and often have highly contentious relationships with police.
Tonight City Visions Radio will discuss how Oakland can move on from the Oscar Grant case by starting to repair the relationship between the Oakland Police Department and youth in the community. Guest speakers include Dr. Deborah Lustig, Research Associate with the Center on Culture, Immigration and Youth Violence Prevention at the University of California, Berkeley; Sergeant Bobby Hookfin, Youth Intervention Unit Supervisor with the Oakland Police Department; Jacky Johnson, Outreach and Events Manager with Youth Uprising; and Nikkita Mitchell, a senior at Castlemont High School in Oakland and Lead Student Organizer with Youth Together.
The discussion will take place from from 7 to 8 p.m. on KALW 91.7 FM. For more information, visit www.cityvisionsradio.com or contact Leyna Lightman at leynalightman@gmail.com.
