a new 10 week program in green building sales and customer service,
with an emphasis in energy efficiency sector job skills. Please share
this opportunity widely with Oakland residents. Students will be
provided with intensive job training and job placement support. Below is

Program
Description
The Energy
Efficiency Sales and Auditing classes begin June 7th at Laney
College. Students will receive career skills
training in energy auditing, and sales, customer service and
administrative
skills for the energy efficiency sector. Classes are all day,
Monday-Thursday
for 10 weeks. The program is free and open to Oakland
residents interested in a career in the
green building sector. Graduates will work use interpersonal skills to
build a
healthier community and planet.

227: Customer Service for the Building Trades
- 35
hrs, 2 units: 2 lec hours/week
- Introduction
to basic concepts of Customer Service as applied to the building
trades:
installers, designers, estimators, and sales persons. Creating a
rapport
with the client, recognizing and responding to the clients needs,
going
beyond client expectations.
- CARP
204: Sustainable Built Environment
- 52.5
hrs, 3 units: 3 lec
- The
Sustainable Built Environment covers principles, strategies and
techniques in the fields of water and resource conservation,
renewable
energy and energy efficiency. Upon course completion students will
be
fully conversant in the trends and opportunities in green
building, and
will understand the terms and concepts for successful employment
in the
green building industry.

28: Energy Management and Efficiency in Buildings

hrs, 2 units: 2 lec
- This
course introduces Energy Use Basics, Effects of Building Design on
Energy
Use, Identifying effective strategies to optimize buildings
systems
efficiencies, correct appliance applications and benefits. Topics
include
but are not limited to terminology, understanding and identifying
different types of HVAC equipment, construction basics, window
design,
lighting fundamentals.

hrs, 2 units: 1.5 lec, 1.5 lab
- Quantitative
study of typical residential energy conservation options:
Introduction to
the elements of residential wood frame construction; testing and
evaluation of strategies to optimize residential building envelope
and
systems efficiencies; introduction to residential energy analysis
software.

39: Energy Auditing and Computer Analysis of Building Efficiency
- 52.5
hrs, 2 units: 1.5 lec, 1.5 lab
- Application
of techniques and processes in residential energy auditing: Field
analysis procedures; inventorying of government and utility
incentives
for energy conservation; use of ACCA Manual J design software,
DOE2.2 and
other related computer modeling software;
verification of computer model results with data collected
in the
lab and field.
- Making
the Financial Case for Green Building
- ARRA :
35 hour lecture series
- Training from
industry
experts in how to make the financial case for investments in green
building, including energy efficiency and renewable energy. Topics
include: Analyzing the costs and benefits of green building, with
an
emphasis on Energy Efficiency; understanding what motivates
customers
purchase green building services; policy, financing structures,
and
rebates and incentives; comparing materials and technologies to
maximize
social, ecological and financial benefits; life cycle analysis;
and
metrics for assessing financial return on green building
investments.
Total: 11 Units, 262.5 hours (26 hrs/week)

Market
The Laney
College green jobs programs are supported by a
dedicated industry advisory council of over 40 potential employers.
These
employers have helped to design this program and are eager to hire
graduates.
There are dozens of new local government programs to stimulate demand
for green
building services in the Bay Area. The City of Oakland
alone has received $34.8
million in Recovery Act funds and has an additional $25 million pending
in
grants that will be dedicated to energy efficiency improvements on
residential
and commercial buildings. These funds
are expected to create 2,245 jobs in the local energy efficiency
sector.
