On Saturday, Sept. 11, ASA Community Science Center - ASACSC - and Science, Engineering and Mathematics Link - SEM Link - will host a Math and Science Back-to-School Boot Camp and Open House from from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the center, 4252 Broadway in Oakland.

The boot camp, which runs from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., is for K-12 students, parents and educators and costs $45. Hands-on workshops give students tools for academic success in math and science, parents preparation to support them and teachers engagement with such topics as using technology in the classroom. Participants may pre-register at www.bit.ly/mathsciencebootcamp.

The Open House, from 2 to 4 p.m., is free and open to the public.

“I created the ASA Community Science Center … for Bay Area youth to learn about and do math and science,” ASACSC Executive Director and Founder Sharon Parker said. There, “kids have the opportunity to develop … skills, engage in hands-on math and science activities or explore [Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics] careers.”

Sponsoring partner SEM Link has a parallel mission: connecting students and practitioners in mentoring relationships that extend and enhance students’ classroom math and science skills. Overall, this event offers Oakland youth comprehensive means of success in math and science.
