Bike to work, school, market or anywhere.

With Oakland celebrating its 18th Bike to Work Day this Thursday, May 12, the East Bay Bicycle Coalition, Walk Oakland Bike Oakland and hundreds of volunteers are throwing a schedule of events befitting of city's two-wheeled commuters.

"More and more people are biking to work every day,” said Renee Rivera, Executive Director of the East Bay Bicycle Coalition - EBBC. “Over the past three years, the numbers of people biking on Bike to Work Day here in the East Bay have almost tripled. Bike to Work Day is a great day to discover just how safe, fun and convenient it is to bike to work."

Pedal Pools, 7 to 8 a.m.

The day starts bright and early with Pedal Pools - organized group rides from each City Council district to Downtown Oakland. This year, constituents of Jane Brunner (District 1), Pat Kernighan (District 2), Nancy Nadel (District 3) and Libby Schaaf (District 4) will be joined by their Council members on their commutes.

Walk Oakland Bike Oakland, or WOBO, ride leaders keep the group at a comfortable pace, and no one is left behind. All pedal pools arrive at 14th and Broadway, at a 12th Street BART Station entrance.

Energizer Stations, most from 7 to 9 a.m.

Not interested in a pedal pool? Then make sure you ride past an energizer station to grab your official 2011 Bike to Work Day tote bag full of freebies and treats. Volunteers organized more than a dozen stations on major routes and at key destinations to cheer on commuters on their way to work. Look for coffee, snacks and some camaraderie with your fellow riders. In addition to the list of neighborhood stations below, the stations at Frank Ogawa Plaza and Fruitvale BART station will be open with free parking and tune ups from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
