Did you miss the local news this week? Some heavy things are happening - tragedy and financial woes merit consideration, but the lighter, brighter activities are a welcome relief. Here are our top stories:

  • How do we frame the shooting deaths that happened in Jack London Square on Monday? Do large media outlets, such as the San Francisco Chronicle, misrepresent Oakland? Does racism play a role in the this portrayal of our city? Commentary by Eric K. Arnold seeks to answer these questions.
  • Reporter Ruth Miller shared information about BART’s Earth Day celebration and ticket giveaways. OL readers paid attention (and hopefully won some free rides).
  • Roller derby seems to be all the rage. Miller informed us of the Oakland Outlaws’ schedule and broke down some of the rules of the sport. Fierce chicks are “in!”
  • Meg Bertoni is giving us regular daily updates about events happening in Oakland, and our readers are appreciating it. Stay tuned for summertime fun!
  • Contributing editor Jennifer Inez Ward is still keeping us abreast of Mayor Jean Quan’s activities - the most recent is the 2011-2013 budget proposal. Are you aware of the details, and how they may affect your life?
