Oakland Local photographers scoured the inaugural Oakland Running Festival last weekend for memorable images to share. An Oaklander won the half-marathon on Sunday, and many other city residents placed high in each of the weekend's four races.
More than 6,500 people registered to race in five events March 27 and 28 that wove through the city, from Temescal to Lake Merritt and Jack London Square. Participants had the option to run a full or half-marathon, a four-person relay, a 5K or a kids' fun run. Marathoners on Sunday ran east into Montclair, and explored the Mandela Parkway to the west.
Tony Torres, 40, of Cedar Glen, Calif., placed first in the marathon, coming in after just two hours and 31 minutes. Ivan Medina, 24, of Hayward came in five minutes later. Three Oaklanders finished in the top 10: Barry Smith, 50; Hugo Ahumada, 36; and Seth Davis, 38. Michelle Meyer, 22, of San Francisco, finished in 10th place, as the fastest woman in the race. She completed the marathon in just less than three hours. (See all the race results.)
A 32-year-old from Oakland, Steve Moreno, won the half-marathon in one hour and 10 minutes. Four other Oakland men placed in the top 10: Juan Gomez, 23; Robert Schneider, 33; Tim Cole, 22; and Christopher Ategeka, 25. Nearly 3,000 people participated in the race.
According to initial Web reports, 946 people finished the full-length marathon, 615 males and 331 females.
Of the total marathon participants, 319 were from Oakland.
Of these, 196 were males. A handful were teenagers and the oldest two were 76.
Of the 123 females, the oldest to compete was 77-year-old Adela Bishop. The youngest, 16-year-old Maya Alexander, completed the race in about six hours.
Oakland had 54 teams in the relay race. A team called "Dumpy Legs Prevention" was the fastest local group, coming in at three hours and 16 minutes. They came in second overall, less than five minutes after a San Francisco team called "The A-Team."
5K winner Gavin Sosa, 31, of Stanford came in at 16:33, nearly a full minute ahead of the competition, but Oaklanders Zach Holt, 18, and and Edrian Luna, 19, finished second and third, under the 18-minute mark, as did sixth-place winner Zelalem Tegeneghe, 23, also of Oakland. Juan Monje, 22, came in eighth. The Oaklander finished the race in 18 minutes 35 seconds.

I have been looking forward to hearing feedback about the running events this weekend! I live right off of Lincoln Ave, and the neighborhood was so proud and excited to cheer on the marathoners as they ran down the street! OPD did a great job of dealing with any traffic issues and we enjoyed interacting with the officers. From our perspective, it sure seemed like a fabulous event, and I hope they hold it again! Great job, runners!
Makes me wish I was actually in running shape. One of these days...
Thanks for the coverage of the Oakland Marathon. I live in Oakland & ran the marathon yesterday. It was an absolute blast! The crowd support was even better than I had imagined. Tony Nguyen got a photo of me, I'm the guy with the green mohawk wearing a yellow singlet. I'm looking forward to this thing growing & plan to run it every year.
Great article...I was in town for the first time visiting a friend, but had to leave before the races. I loved Oakland and look forward to coming back next year to run the full marathon. It's a great way to see more of the city.
