The students at Oakland School for the Arts have created a "haunted school" - promising to be so creepy and frightening you'll think you're in an abandoned gothic mansion or neglected cemetery.
Those who are brave (or foolish) enough to tour “The Haunted School,” can take the risk from 7 to 10 p.m. this Thursday, Oct. 28 through Sunday, Oct.31 in the school’s Black Box Theater. Advance tickets are $4 for students and $5 for adults.
Jean-Francois Revon, arts management department head and Bay Area set designer, said this is the department's first fundraiser and explained the students came up with the theme, wrote, directed and produced “The Haunted School” under the guidance of Revon.
He said attendees will be guided through the campus and experience typical high school situations and characters, but with terrifying twists. Circus school performers will drop from the ceiling like spiders from their webs; contortionists will pop out of school lockers; and the cafeteria lunch lady will serve her stomach’s guts for lunch. Revon advised avoiding the crazy custodian if possible and to be cautious in the school playground.
Revon, originally from Paris, has been a professional set designer and technical manager for 18 years and has designed more than 250 productions in the Bay Area. He said he always wanted to teach arts management.
“My passion is teaching," he said. "It’s quite fantastic to work with the students and see how creative and diverse they are. I love working with all of them; it’s fascinating.
"The truth of the matter is, what matters most is not perfection, but the learning,” Revon added.
Each component of the haunted school is designed or made by the students including the lights, sets, props, costumes and sound. Revon said they learned how to design and mix audio like professional sound engineers and have spent about two months preparing what they hope to be their new annual spooky event.
So ... do you dare to be scared?
