Support for the residents of Haiti has been rolling in from around the world in the last two weeks with contributions coming from the largest organizations to the smallest individuals. The horrible event has kicked the Bay Area's activists into overdrive with fundraisers throughout the area, technology brainstorming sessions and several delegations making the trek to offer aid in every area from medical to media coverage. But with over 200,000 people dead and many more homeless there is still much that needs to be done.
The latest effort kicks off tonight in downtown Oakland as D'wayne Wiggins of Grammy award winning Oakland soul group Tony Toni Tone, launches his House Party Tour of Relief. The multi-city tour hopes to raise $100,000 in one week to be donated to the Haiti Emergency Relief Fund, a Bay Area social justice organization founded by Walter Riley, Esq.,and actors Danny Glover and Harry Belafonte.
"This is one of the most devastating earthquakes in modern times" says Wiggins. "We have to come together in solidarity and lead by example."
The show takes place at two downtown venues tonight, with Oakland's rising star Kev Choice acting as musical director, and has attracted a distinguished lineup of prominent Bay Area artists, including Oakland native Lenny Williams, Mr. FAB, Ise Lyfe and Latoya London.
Oakland has a long history of producing some of the best soul music in the country and Wiggins has brought together an impressive listing of some of The Town's brightest stars. Here's a small taste of some of the music that you'll here tonight, jamming for the cause.
