Oakland Underground Film Festival Presents Black Dynamite
70s parody playing in Oaktown tonight
Black Dynamite, a clever marriage of Blaxploitation and Kung Fu movies set to Adrian Younge's original score, is poised to become a cult classic. Its San Francisco premiere at the Castro Theater on Friday, November 20, and Oakland premiere on Saturday, November 21, are accompanied personally by Director Scott Sanders and star Michael Jai White.
The San Francisco premiere may come first chronologically, but the Oakland Underground Film Festival saves the best for last: Saturday's show is co-presented by Will "The Thrill" Viharo and Monica the Tiki Goddess, with 1970s cinema trivia and Blaxploitation DVD giveaway.
Not that the audience would need much incentive to enjoy the cinematic experience, which is receiving critical praise for being “a neck-snapping orgy of martial-arts mayhem" (Film Threat) as well as having "sharp comedy writing" and an excellent leading man (Marlow Stern) and "taking a nice big sucker punch at the underlying politics of our time" (Sundance Film Festival), just to name a few accolades.
The Grand Tavern in Oakland is even holding a pre-party for this momentus occasion, featuring Linden Street Brewery's Black Lager, other drink specials, guest DJs from Wax
Poetics Records (the label for the acclaimed original motion picture score), and special prizes and giveaways. 70s attire is encouraged, but not required.
