Frank Rose, an East Oakland community leader and retired U.S. postal worker, passed away this week.

Rose was a senior citizen activist and former Police Advisory Board member who had been active in economic development and community revitalization issues. He had been board president at the East Oakland Boxing Association and Smart Moves Program. The boxing program has become an academic program and violence prevention center for youth in East Oakland.

In 2004, then Mayor Jerry Brown presented the first Oakland Citizen Humanitarian Award to Rose. More recently, Rose was voted an Oakland Local Hero.

Frank Rose is replaceable and will be sorely missed.  He never ceased to give all he could for his community,  helping the children and the seniors. Much love goes out to his family for sharing him with us.

Frank Rose was NOT the Founder of the East Oakland Boxing Association nor the Co-Founder. Mr. Stanley Garcia was the Founder and acted alone in starting this organization. Please correct the title of this article.

Pulled directly from the EOBA website under History and Facts

Stanley Garcia, former professional boxer and long-time Oakland resident, founded the East Oakland Boxing Association in 1987 because he felt strongly that boxing kept him positively engaged and off the streets. Since then, the organization has expanded its services to include academics, gardening, art, enrichment, field trips, and more.

Thanks for the correction.

My Deepest condolences goes out to the family of Mr. Frank Rose and to all that knew and loved him. I viewed Mr. Rose as champion of social justice, helping to bring change and upliftment to our entire community. God Bless You. RIP Mr. Rose.
