"Rawhide," one of Slimm Buick's art bikes, will be on display Saturday.
To Slimm Buick - a Richmond-based artist and entertainer - bikes aren’t just tools for exercise or commuting. They’re also the perfect canvas.
For more than two decades, Buick has created one-of-a-kind art bikes from scavenged parts, paint, leather and whatever else catches his eye. Now he wants to stretch his vision beyond the bike, to the bike trail.
His vision: turn Richmond’s Greenway bike path into a Route 66 for cyclists.
“It seems like most of the time you see roadside attractions they’re more geared toward cars,” Buick said. “They should be geared to bicycles because you go so much slower.”
Already gardens dot the side of the path. One offers a spot to pick berries. But this Saturday, Nov. 13, Buick and some friends will host a gathering to help expand the vision. Buick has some projects in mind, including murals and sculptures made from old bikes. His ultimate goal is to open a Bicycle Art Salon Cafe: part repair shop, part pit stop, part gallery for his tricked out rides.
Saturday’s free event is more of a party and planning session. If you go, expect music, food, a free bike repair clinic and bike valet parking by Richmond Spokes.
“It’s mostly just a chance to meet a bunch of people and get them interested,” said Buick. And of course, see some art bikes.
