Town Funk Block Party Unveils New Arts District, June 5

OAKLAND, CA - May 17, 2010 - On Saturday, June 5th, 2010, the Community Rejuvenation Project (CRP) will unveil four new murals with themes based in local music and culture from noon - 5 PM at the intersection of 19th St. and Park Blvd in the Parkway District. The block party is sponsored by the Lake Merritt Business Association who is partnering with CRP, Woody’s Café and Laundromat, local neighborhood group the Lake Neighbors, Lotus Bloom Family Center, and Regeneration Church to put on a Summer Block Party featuring a Michael Jackson tribute honoring the anniversary of his death.

Local Funktown musicians Rocker T, Jern Eye, and DJ Zeph will perform along with youth from Future Shock Oakland, Lyric Dance Ensemble, Oakland High's Beats Rhymes and Life program and the winner of their upcoming talent show. Controlling the tempo will be DJ Basta and the Roots and Branches crew with appearances by Baby Champ and the Scrapper Bike Team. "This event will kick off the series of summer block parties that Roots and Branches and the Community Rejuvenation Project will be putting on regularly this year," says Nick Basta, founder of Roots and Branches.

The Community Rejuvenation Project transforms blighted areas of the community through murals, community clean-up, landscaping, gardening, and community celebrations. The grassroots organization transform high target walls, routinely blighted areas, and abandoned lots and turn them into points of community pride.

Lake Neighbors is a neighborhood group in the East Lake district of Oakland whose purpose is to build community and create a safe environment to work, live and play through neighborhood events, education and gardening programs

There is no charge to attend the event. To volunteer at the Town Funk Block Party contact betsy@lakeneighbors.org.

This is a place where a new Oaklander shares ideas about eating local, sometimes eating from an urban garden, sometimes having noteworthy experiences in an urban garden, regular trips to the farmers market, cooking in a tiny kitchen, sometimes eating out, and the occasional great bottle of wine. The purpose is to add my voice to the many Bay Area locals who are making locavore work. I’ll warn you, I’m not a purist, and I’ll not even define local, but I hate waste and love people. I save zip lock bags, rescue lettuce from the Lucky’s dumpster, share chickens with my neighbors and love an impromptu covered dish. You’re invited to comment, dispute, approve, answer my questions and ask your own. Can’t wait to hear from you! Peace and Grace, Betsy J.
