Learn to put your best foot forward, and snag those elusive job openings, next week at Wardrobe for Opportunity's open house, which will showcase the group's snazzy new digs in downtown Oakland.
The events, on Monday and Tuesday, will feature refreshments and a chance to learn about the organization's programs and volunteering opportunities.
Wardrobe for Opportunity's mission is to help Bay Area residents find a job, keep that job and build a career. The group partners with more than 60 community organizations to help low-income jobseekers.
It offers image and interview workshops, professional image coaching and job advancement programs. The goal, according to the group's Web site, is to give "low-income jobseekers the confidence, networks and experience they need to pursue the career of their dreams."
In 2009, more than 1,300 people received clothing and image consultations. Wardrobe for Opportunity reported that the employment rate for clients receiving professional interview clothing increased by 85 percent within the first month of their appointments. Even more impressive, more than 90 percent of individuals who received working wardrobes were still employed three months later. They also reported a 23 percent salary bump.

According to the group, it has helped more than 17,500 low-income clients who were referred from 150 job-training and social service partners since 1995. The agency has locations in downtown Oakland and Concord. More than 200 volunteers help keep the group going.
Wardrobe for Opportunity has partnerships with companies such as Chevron and Bank of the West, and helps connect clients directly to businesses through a range of networking events and career programs.
During the open houses, there will be tours through the new space, which features a larger classroom, expanded boutique with nicer dressing rooms and other improvements. Mainly it's a way for people to learn about all the group has to offer.
"It's a chance for them to see the changes we've made," one staff member said. "It's a chance to get reconnected with Wardrobe for Opportunity and our services."
Open houses occur Monday, March 15, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. and Tuesday, March 16, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Learn more here.
