Mingus Amungus
Looking for dinner, a great live show and a chance to give back to the community?
This Thursday, Sept. 16, the Bay Area’s own Mingus Amungus will bring the boundary pushing spirit of the legendary Charles Mingus to the stage blending jazz, hip-hop, funk and classical forms at Yoshi’s Oakland. Founded in 1994 the band is comprised of outstanding musicians who developed their skills working with regarded high school ensembles, prestigious universities and music industry notables. Joining the band is Berkeley High Alum, spoken-word artist and playwright Chinaka Hodge.
This night of music, dance and celebration is a fundraiser for the Anthony “Lee” Franklin Memorial Scholarship Fund. Lee was diagnosed with leukemia at 13, but was extremely active during his remission and became a standout athlete at Berkeley High. At the age of 22, Lee, a second baseman at the University of Arizona, succumbed to his disease. A fund was established in his name to ensure that his impact on friends, family and all who came in contact with him and his fighting spirit are remembered. The scholarship is sponsored by Berkeley High School Athletic Fund, Hematology/Oncology Department at Children’s Hospital Oakland and The Lee Franklin Memorial Fund.
Catch Mingus Amungus with special guest Hodge at Yoshi’s Oakland, 510 Embarcadero. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.; event starts at 8 p.m. Price: $25; purchase tickets here.
