Richmond Cares Candlelight Vigil
The rape of a 15 year old girl last week in Richmond has sent chills throughout the Bay Area community followed quickly by anger, pain and confusion.
The organizers from Youth Together are inviting local residents, youth and community leaders to gather at the school tomorrow to reflect on the incident, start working on ways to prevent this from happening in the future and to support the students of Richmond as they begin to rebuild their community.
“This is about Richmond, San Pablo and the community coming together,” said Norma Bautista, a Richmond High Senior. “We don’t support walking by and doing nothing. We don’t support violence. We want the nation to know we’re good people.”
The event will include music, dance, the spoken word by youth poets and will end with a candlelight vigil to show support for the rape victim and healing for the community. Speakers include students, teachers, parents, Youth Together as well as the School Superintendent, School Board Members, County Supervisor John Gioia, and Richmond Mayor Gayle McLaughlin. Family members of the rape victim are expected to speak prior to the candlelight vigil.
