It's just about the last minute that communities can apply to Google for free wireless broadband fiber in their communities--and, with the help of a committee of about 12 hard-working local techies, developers and business-people; Oakland's squeaked in under the wire.

Google  announced in February that the company planned to develop an experimental fiber project in one or more cities around the country and invited cities to apply. Oakland just made the deadline with a heart-felt pitch and a rush of paperwork, as this video shot by Shaun Tai of ODALC shows.

The Oakland Local Editorial Team is made up of Kwan Booth, Amy Gahran, Irene Florez, Michelle Fitzhugh-Craig, Eric Arnold, Jennifer Inez Ward, CB Smith-Dahl, Meg Bertoni, Susan Mernit, Tehea Robie, Ruth Miller, Debi Mason, and others.

So what is the city's plan for this technology if Oakland is by some change selected. What parts of the city will have this technology deployed etc...
