East Oakland Gets Creative for Green Living

Love Yo' Mama Health and Green Fest

Love Yo' Mama Health and Green Fest

Our Oakland: Eastside Stories attended the 2nd annual Love Yo’ Mama Health and Green Festival in East Oakland last Saturday, April 24. The event took place outside on the campuses of the ACORN Woodland and Encompass Academy schools right next to the new East Oakland Community Library at 81st St. and Rudsdale.

Plenty of sunshine and loads of positive energy kept the mood elevated for the entire day. It was exciting to see so many families and youth come together to support and learn about the importance of healthy living and environment for their communities and ultimately the planet, and have a great time too!

The Our Oakland team engaged attendees by having them take a few moments to get creative and show us what a 'Green' and healthy East Oakland meant and looked like to them. Attendees of all ages enjoyed drawing us a picture to display their ideas. Several attendees enjoyed the creativity process so much, we needed an extra ‘art’ table!

Love Yo’ Mama was co-sponsored by ACORN Woodland Elementary, EnCompass Academy, Oakland Parks & Recreation-Tassafaronga and Communities for a Better Environment. The event included performances, a pre-event parade, and several groups interested in educating the community about the importance of healthy and green-living.

Our Oakland : Eastside Stories is a multi-faceted public art project by Rene Yung that creates a new platform for community storytelling about East Oakland, and will beautify the new East Oakland Community Library at 81st and Rudsdale. The overall theme of the project is Mutuality + Transformation, meaning that as members of a community, each of us is interconnected and we have the power to individually and collectively take action to make positive changes in our communities. The project is made possible by the Oakland Public Art Program in connection to the new East Oakland Community Library. The project consists of three parts: an Online Digital Portal of Community Stories about East Oakland, Public Art in the Library with art glass in a 64-foot clerestory window and an Interactive Pod dedicated to shared community stories. We invite you to participate! Share your thoughts and stories about East Oakland for your community by uploading digital photos, video, written word or music to http://ouroakland.org.
