Oakland Based Urban Gardens (OBUGS) will hold a rummage sale Apr. 10, to benefit its community spring planting event. You'll find kitchenwares, working appliances and electronics, toys, CDs and DVDs, jewelry, clothing, books and crafting supplies.
Donations will be accepted through Apr. 2, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the OBUGS office, 1724 Mandela Parkway, #5. (OBUGS cannot accept large furniture, computer equipment, monitors or software that is older than two years, or clothing in poor shape.)
For eleven years, OBUGS has been building healthy communities through experiential learning programs offered to children, youth, and families in a network of school and neighborhood gardens, green spaces and farmers' markets. OBUGS offers in- and after-school, summer camp and youth entrepreneurship programs geared towards nutritional, scientific and environmental education.
Oakland businesswoman Margaret Majua and teacher/librarian Dorothy Noyon founded the group in 1998 to work with low-income families on issues involving affordable, fresh food. They started with a team of Lafayette School students, teachers and a local Boy Scout troop to revitalize a community garden on campus that had fallen into neglect.
About 400 students from Oakland schools attend OBUGS programs every week. The group has five food-producing gardens in West Oakland, all of which are used for hands-on educational activities for kids.
