As part of this month’s events honoring the earth, it is important to celebrate the Environmental Justice movement and its intersections with green job and housing opportunities.

The “Love Yo Mama” Earth Day event (organized by Communities for a Better Environment) begins with a rally celebrating East Oakland’s resilience and calling for a healthier, greener community starting at 11 a.m. today at Tassafaronga Recreation Center.

A festive parade featuring Scraper Bikes, drummers, and youth dancers will follow the rally.

From 1 to 6 p.m. there will be a family-friendly event at Acorn Woodland Elementary School that will include free health screenings, youth performances, speakers and more.

Nehanda Imara, a community organizer with Communities for a Better Environment, said the “Love Yo Mama” event has elements that other Earth Day events may not address.

“One theme is black and brown unity," she said. "It’s a celebration of East Oakland’s cultural and historical assets. East Oakland has a long history of social justice. It’s also a family event with fun activities for kids. It’s a well-rounded event and it shows that East Oakland matters.”
