Oakland's 5th Annual Walk Against Poverty is coming up fast. The walk, and a following community fair, will take place at Lake Merritt this Saturday, May 22.
It is sponsored by the Oakland Community Action Partnership (OCAP) along with the United Way of the East Bay.
According to OCAP's website, "The community walk aims to raise awareness about the conditions of the 76,489 people who live in poverty and violence within the City of Oakland," as well as raise funds for local organizations that aim to reduce the impacts of poverty and violence.
During the community fair advocacy organizations will be tabling, local artists will provide live entertainment and City officials will be on hand to discuss ways to help Oakland's low income community. Snacks will be provided.
Organizers will also present the Community Service, Youth Service and Leadership awards to nominated individuals.
For those who want to volunteer during the event there will be a training session tomorrow evening, May 20, at City Hall.
On Saturday the first 400 participants to bring a non-perishable food item at registration will receive a free T-shirt.
